Random things of note:

-Lecture on beating children in Russian Lit.

-Was Fyodor Sologub a masochist? He did seem to enjoy getting beaten by his mother at least until he was in his thirties.

-There is apparently a facebook app that predicts your next menstrual cycle based on your friends' . Seriously, facebook? It's called The Pill. Or it's called "Pay attention and count".

-I really don't like the name "Lyudmila".

On September 22, Robobilly will be opening for A Hawk and a Hacksaw at the Nightlight.

Who is A Hawk and a Hacksaw, you ask?

Ever heard of Jeremy Barnes? He's the drummer. Ever heard of Neutral Milk Hotel? He was also their drummer.

I and my lovely bandmates will be fo' realz playing an opener for the drummer of NMH's band.

Pinch me...I'm so excited I can barely breathe.

Also...I just reread my entry about Valerie's and my quest to find the worst movie ever last summer, and I would like to just point out that I watched a pretty shitty one the other night called "Stealth". It wasn't the spectacularly awful train wreck that was "Killer Drag Queens on Dope" but it was pretty laughable. The military builds this AI stealth bomber that develops the ability to think for itself. It's evil for a while and kills one of the three pilots that are supposed to babysit it, but then after one of the other pilots crash lands in the mountains of North Korea and the eeeeeeeeeeeevillllllllllllll airplane has a change of....heart....?.....and works with the last pilot to rescue the one who's lost (played by Jessica Biel...of course she ends up as some helpless damsel in distress) and through a series of remarkable twists and turns through a series of remarkably large plot holes, the formerly eeeeeeeeeevillllllllllll diabolical plane sacrifices itself to save the other two pilots, who are of course in love and end up together.

I suppose the plot isn't so much ridiculous as the plot holes. For instance, the eeeeeeeeeevillllllllllllllll plane loses its magical radar cloaking device when its trying to rescue Jessica Biel and has to fly under the radar floor....fifteen feet above the ground. Surprisingly, no one in FUCKING NORTH KOREA seemed to notice an American plane zipping along fifteen feet above sea level, and there's a lot of hyperdramatic intrigue about trying to assassinate people and commit suicide and stuff.

Also, the eeeeeeeeevillllllllllllllllllll plan is a total HAL ripoff, right down to the glaring red eye. It also downloads music to play loudly when it doesn't feel like listening to the programmers. It's eeeeeeeeeevillllllllllllll recalcitrant teenage HAL!

11:24 pm - basal ganglia
"In accordance with the first hypothesis, peak activity appeared during high-g spatial tasks on one or both sides of the lateral prefrontal cortex, particularly around the medial frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate, with some limited activation of the visual system, and some activation of the parietal lobes, both of which are commonly active during spatial tasks (Duncan, et al. 2000). Overall, the evidence supported the first hypothesis and seems to indicate that the lateral frontal cortex is especially important in the presentation of intelligence."

Can you believe I just wrote that? This summer made me forget how psychology writing makes my soul bleed sometimes.

"The leaves of the trees did not stir, cicadas called, and the monotonous, dull noise of the sea, coming from below, spoke of the peace, of the eternal sleep that waits us. So it had sounded below when neither Yalta nor Oreanda were there, so it sounded now and would go on sounding with the same dull indifference when we are no longer here. And in this constancy, in this utter indifference to the life and death of each of us, there perhaps lies hidden the pledge of our eternal salvation, the unceasing movement of life on earth, of unceasing perfection. Sitting beside the young woman, who looked so beautiful in the dawn, appeased and enchanted by the view of this magical decor - sea, mountains, clouds, the open sky - Gurov reflected that, essentially, if you thought of it everything was beautiful in this world, everything except for what we ourselves think and do when we forget the higher goals of being and our human dignity."

-Anton Chekhov, The Lady With the Little Dog

I rocked out my first official shift as a shift supervisor at Alpine yesterday morning. I had to be in at 8 am, and due to a series of awesome-but-unhealthy decisions involving vodka and cranberry juice, followed by a series of questionable-but-hopefully-this-will-maybe-go-somewhere-and-not-end-up-sucking decisions involving guys (er...just one guy), I only had one hour of sleep and was actually STILL DRUNK when I came into work. We were waaaayyyyyy understaffed, and completely slammed, since yesterday was move-in day.

Needless to say, it was a bit of a clusterfuck.

But we pulled it off! I pulled it off! Drunk and then with a hangover on one hour of sleep! That, ladies and gentlemen, is the Alpine way.

Also, this afforded me to come up with a hangover cure:

Bagel with egg, half a slice of cheese, and tomato.
Orange juice.
Bottle of water.
Cup of tea or coffee, depending on how much caffeine you can handle.
More water.
More caffeine, if you need it.
Drink water continuously for the rest of the day.

I didn't drink water for the rest of the day, and subsequently ended up with a splitting headache. You'll have to pee every ten minutes, but it's so worth it.

I also got to play with a kitten named 'Big Texas' on thursday night. He was still in that tiny, tiny kitten phase where they can sit in the palm of your hand. I thought I was going to spontaneously combust from how cute he was.

Holy crap it's been a good week.

8:00 pm - geekface
As a throwback to when we all did this in high school:

My Life: The Fall 2009 Edition

RUSS 441: Russian Literature and Culture (taught by none other than Pooshy himself!)
GERM 302: German Language and Culture
HUNG 401: Beginning Hungarian (don't ask)
DRAM 282: Theatre History
PSYC 434: Cognitive Neuroscience

I'm such a geek. But I am so ridiculously excited about both cognitive neuroscience and Hungarian that it might just be a little bit sad.

9:39 pm - Scout's honor.
I finally got to put my first aid skills to use the other night when I was over at my friend Chip's house. He stabbed himself in the hand while trying to shotgun a beer.

This was after Paul put on a bike helmet and made Chip hit him over the head with a shovel.

I have the coolest friends ever.

When I clicked on "post an entry", a little message popped up that asked "Restore from saved draft?" Given that I have not updated here in months, out of curiosity I clicked "Yes". The following appeared on the screen:

"Wh"

The fuck? I'll probably never make it as a writer if that's as much as I'm willing to attempt at one go. Not that I really had any mad aspirations toward the written word to begin with, but it is good to keep one's mind open.

According to the homepage, I have not updated my journal in fifteen weeks. That's almost four months. I don't remember what my last entry was about, but it was probably really, really stupid. I usually feel like I have something profound to say and then it just ends up getting lost somewhere during the journey from my brain to my fingertips and a bunch of random and not very exciting bullshit emerges.

Words I enjoy:

autoclave
cabochon
pixellated
sidereal

In other somewhat less exciting news, I'm continuing to make a mess of both my lovelife and my lifelife. I got a second job at a small jewelry store on franklin street, and as much as I enjoy working there, my hatred for the general public continues to grow. Aside from the stereotypical sorostitute who is incapable of placing an order for food without hanging up the cell phone that should just be surgically attached to her head, the sphere is expanding to include mothers who can't control their bratty children and snotty preteens who think it's likeomgsosocool to color coordinate their underwear with the rest of their outfit and then show it off. Because nothing says classy like a bra with a tube top.

In other news, I'm housesitting for my friend Sarah, which means I can have my kittycat with me for a few days! Hooray! Everyone needs something furry to come home to.

6:22 pm - Between the viaducts of your dream.
It's been a long time. I have approximately 15 minutes before I have to get in my (recently repaired) car, drive, park, get out, sell bagels until 2 am, get back in drive home, sleep, repeat. I haven't written once this semester. I used to try to start journal entries, and then would give up and go about my business. When I write, everything seems too petty, and I think that no one will want to read this trivial crap.

But here I am, writing writing writing. I don't know if it's the stress of exams or work or a whacked-out sleep schedule or being in love, or some combination of thereof, but I have so much emotion these days. It's bizarre. And yet my life has never felt more together, and I've never felt more sure of myself and who I am and who I'm going to be, ever. I'm so much more positive than I used to be. I still don't really care about politics.

The weird thing about being in love is that sometimes your mood can rise or fall depending on the tone of a text message. That can suck. Or it can be awesome. It depends on the direction of the mood, I guess.

6:12 pm - once upon a time in cha-town.
Valerie and I are on a quest to watch the worst movie ever this summer. Suggestions?

So far, we've seen the following:

Bring It On: In It To Win It
Killer Drag Queens On Dope

That's it thus far. Remember, we're hunting up movies that are so bad they're AMAZING, not movies that are just bad. For example, Solaris, which I watched last night, is just bad. Killer Drag Queens on Dope, on the other hand, is so bad that it's effing spectacular.

I am happy. Happy happy happy.

Unbelievably so.

current music: Jackson's Java ambience.

5:48 pm - harmonic

All I feel like doing is laying on the floor and listening to Rachmaninov and Satie. I don't know how to be by myself.

I thought I was making poetry and magic, but it turned out to be a lot of nothing. I'll keep trying though. I hope I never get tired of trying.

Broken Social Scene - Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl
Regina Spektor - Samson
Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto II
Erik Satie - Gnossiene I
Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata
The Beatles - Blackbird
Sigur Ros - Staralfur
Sufjan Stevens - For The Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti

current music: see below.
